What is the difference between synthetic, semi-synthetic, and non-synthetic engine oil?

  • Non-synthetic engine oil, also called conventional oil, is made of refined crude oil.
  • Synthetic oil is a man-made blend; most synthetics start with a base of conventional oil that has been highly refined, re-engineered, and combined with additives to give it more protection.
  • Semi-synthetic or synthetic blend oil, mixes conventional oil with a synthetic base stock for better performance.

Why do race cars use thicker oils?
Race cars use thicker oil to protect the engine during the extreme temperatures experienced on the track. When temperatures rise in and around your race car, engine oil starts to thin out. Thick oil will keep the engine running smoothly when the heat is on.

How often should you change your engine oil in a race car?
How often you change the oil in your race car depends on the type of oil you use (synthetic-versus non-synthetic), the track your drive on (dirt kicks up more particles), and the advice of your pit crew—some like to change the oil after every race. If you don't want to change your oil after every race, just top off fluids, change the filter, and do a complete change every 500 laps.
