Racing Power Steering Fluids
Are there different types of power steering fluid?
Yes. Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) can be used in some power steering systems, usually in cars built between 1970 and 1990. Non-synthetic, mineral-based hydraulic fluid can be used in cars that accept ATF. Synthetic power steering fluidâ€â€a non-oil-based, high-performance fluid created in a labâ€â€is the most common type of power steering fluid used in newer vehicles and racing applications.
How often do you need to change the power steering fluid in a race car?
As with other types of racing fluid, how often you change your power steering fluid is based on how you run your race car. Change your power steering fluid two or three times a year if you're an occasional racer; change it more often if you race more than once a week. Whenever your power steering fluid is dark, smells burnt, or contains dirt and debris, it’s time for a flush and a change.
Can I drive a race car without power steering fluid?
While you can drive your car without power steering fluid, it is not recommended on a long-term basis. Not only will your race car be difficult to steer, but a lack of fluid can also damage the power steering pump.
