Racing Helmet Skirts

A helmet skirt is a fire-resistant fabric extension that attaches around the lower edge of a racing helmet to provide additional coverage around the driver’s neck and upper shoulder area. It helps protect the driver from heat, flames, dirt, dust, and track debris. Depending on the design, a racing helmet skirt can also help limit airflow and wind noise around the helmet. Match the skirt to your helmet, required coverage, attachment method, and applicable racing rules. Behrent’s carries Nomex® helmet skirt options and other fire-resistant designs from Impact Racing and Simpson, including SFI, hook-and-loop, and sewn-in helmet skirt configurations. Compare material, layers, size, shape, attachment style, and documented SFI rating before adding a fire-resistant helmet skirt to your racing safety gear.

Choosing a Nomex or SFI Helmet Skirt

Nomex and CarbonX helmet dust skirts use different fire-resistant materials. Nomex is an inherently flame-resistant aramid fiber, while CarbonX is a carbon-based flame-resistant fabric. Both are used in motorsports safety gear, but construction, layers, feel, breathability, and SFI ratings vary by product. Compare the individual skirt’s specifications rather than choosing by material name alone.

SFI-Rated Helmet Skirts

An SFI helmet skirt is manufactured and tested to the SFI specification identified by the manufacturer. An SFI 3.3/5 designation identifies a specific level within SFI Specification 3.3 for driver accessories; use the product’s documented rating and your sanctioning body’s current requirements when selecting a skirt.

Selecting the Right Helmet Skirt Fit & Attachment

Start with the helmet manufacturer’s fit and compatibility information. The skirt needs to provide the required coverage without compromising helmet fit, communications equipment, your driving suit, or your frontal head restraint.

  • Size and shape: Match the skirt to the helmet brand, model, and specified size group. Standard, contoured, and tapered designs can provide different coverage and fit.
  • Sewn-in vs. hook-and-loop: Choose a sewn-in helmet skirt when you want an integrated installation and your helmet supports it. Choose a hook-and-loop helmet skirt when you want a removable skirt that’s easier to replace or change. In either case, verify compatibility with your specific helmet.
  • Frontal head restraint fit: A helmet skirt can interfere with a HANS or other frontal head restraint if excess material bunches around the helmet, suit, or restraint. Check the complete combination for clearance and movement. A tapered skirt may tuck into the driving suit more easily and reduce excess material around some restraint systems.

How To Attach a Racing Helmet Skirt

Attach a racing helmet skirt according to the skirt and helmet manufacturers’ instructions. The installation method depends primarily on whether you have a removable hook-and-loop design or an integrated sewn-in model.

  • Hook-and-loop models: Attach the skirt to the compatible fastening material at the helmet’s specified lower interior edge, following the manufacturer’s positioning instructions.
  • Sewn-in models: Use the factory or an authorized helmet service provider when the helmet manufacturer requires professional installation.
  • Existing helmets: You can add a skirt to an existing racing helmet when the helmet and skirt manufacturers approve the combination and attachment method.
  • Helmet modifications: Use only approved adhesives, fasteners, and attachment locations. Don’t drill, sew, or permanently alter the helmet shell unless its manufacturer specifically authorizes it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Helmet Skirts

How long should a helmet skirt be for drag racing?

For applications governed by the applicable SFI specification, qualifying drag-racing helmet skirts must meet the specified minimum length, which may be eight inches depending on the applicable specification. Confirm the current SFI specification and your sanctioning body’s rulebook before ordering, since required construction, rating, and coverage depend on the class.

Are helmet skirts required in every type of racing?

No. Helmet-skirt requirements vary by racing series, class, sanctioning body, and vehicle. Some applications may require an SFI helmet skirt or other specified fire-resistant equipment, while others may not require a skirt. Check the current rulebook for your class before selecting safety equipment.
